Success!

My very first full blown ordinance that I drafted for Beach City just got adopted by the City Council this week.

Imagine a superheroine with a cape flapping in the wind standing on a rocky cliff overlooking the beach. That's how I'm feelin' right about now. I know changing local laws isn't exactly mindblowing in the grand scheme of things, but I love being at a job where I feel like the work I'm doing is actually making a real difference for the better.

And tomorrow's a day off from work for the holiday weekend! It has been a good week, indeed.

To the King of Pop

I was completely shell-shocked and saddened by Michael Jackson's sudden death this afternoon. I grew up to his music, I love the classic music videos, and I still get excited when the DJ spins his tunes.

He was around for my entire life, and I guess in some ways, I thought he'd always be around. I can't believe he's gone. His life was such a roller coaster. But despite all the craziness and melodrama and strangeness, it can't be doubted that he really was a legend. I hope now he can find peace.

Welcome to the Club

So another state governor, South Carolina Governor Sanford giving wanderlust a whole new meaning, bites the dust. I wonder who's up to bat next.

But on a more serious note, it always makes me kind of sad to see marital troubles aired out for all the world to see and judge. What is more personal and private than the inner workings or failings of a relationship between two people? I know people say "it comes with the territory", and this story came about through a strange MIA backdrop, but it's sad just the same. And is it just me, or has there been a LOT more than the usual fare of marital infidelity stories in the news these days? Where's all the love gone?

Hello Summer

I kicked off the official start to the summer season this past weekend by attending my all-time favorite LaLa land summer event - movie screenings at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with Cinespia. Saturday night's screening was The Graduate, a classic that I loved even more this time around than the last time I saw it, which has to be over a decade ago now. And I didn't realize how HOT Dustin Hoffman was in that movie. Hello, beautiful tanned toned nekkid chest in the pool scene!

The cemetery movie screenings are the perfect summer evening outing. I love the anticipation as everyone waits in line for the gates to open and people are already breaking out their picnics. I love laughing with my friends and gorging on a medley of food and wine before the movie starts. I love the carefree, lighthearted, friendly, happy atmosphere of the crowd. I love the music spinning before the movie starts. I love the smell of the grass under my feet. I love wrapping a blanket around me as the night darkens and as I get absorbed into the movie. I love the simplicity of it all. I can't wait to go back again and again throughout the summer. Won't you come join me?

Hey Now, Sports Fans

While as an Angeleno, I was happy to see the Lakers win the NBA Championships yesterday and cheered in front of my telly, it was sad to see the "celebrations" that happened downtown. I'm sorry, but when did rioting, defacing and vandalizing property in your home city of which you are so happy and proud to be part of because your city's basketball team just won the basketball championship title equal a celebration of said home city and home team?

I was reading about the rioting idiot sports fans this morning when I came across this reader comment, and I loved it so much that I had to repost it here:

"400,000 gays and lesbians can come together, have a peaceful celebration with no incidents while Laker fan idiots go trash the streets, set fires and tip cars. Which group is setting the better example?"

Happy Pride!

It's Gay Pride weekend here in LaLa Land, and I decided to check out the parade in West Hollywood. My friends were marching in the parade with LGLA, the organization that they were members of, and I ended up joining them on the parade route. I've never marched in a parade before, unless you count the Halloween costume parade we had in elementary school. So there I was walking down Santa Monica Boulevard amid much waving and cheering. A high school friend was watching the parade and yelled out my name. Running into friends is always so nice. Another random guy ran up to me begging to get my rainbow arm warmers that I was wearing from my Rainbow Brite costume of Halloween past, and said his his wife "would die to have" them. He seemed so enthusiastic and sincere that I just gave them to him. I figure I still have my rainbow stockings. It was a fun afternoon. Here are some shots of the festivities:

The signs we held during our parading. Here's to getting Prop 8 repealed in the next election!

Drag queen fabulousness galore.

This guy waved at me. And there were of course plenty of scantily clad men to admire. Too bad they're all gay. Sigh.
This was to promote Spamalot, opening at a theater in LA this summer. There was a little Spam can chariot, too.

Gotta love all the corporate sponsors joining in the Gay Pride parade.

Gelson's even had a delivery truck on the parade route, right behind these shopping carts.

Go Metro!
